As a person ages, their teeth can become stained. Getting pearly-white teeth is not impossible and with the technology present today, the process does not necessarily need to be painful. One of these solutions are dental veneers, which have been used by thousands of people around the world for years and with great results. When applied skillfully, porcelain veneers can remove misaligned, dark colored, chipped or worn teeth.
Dental veneers are thin layers of porcelain that are laid on the front surface of the user’s teeth. These are custom-made for the person so that they will fit the color, shape, size and length of the teeth of the user. Most veneers are made out of porcelain, although there are also plenty made out of resin composite materials. Knowing the right type of material to use is a task best discussed with the dentist. However, do know that porcelain-based veneers can resist stains better, while resin composite ones are thinner and thus require less surface removal.
Veneers are often used to fix chipped or broken teeth. They are also used in cases where the teeth are discolored due to a root canal treatment, fluoride or other causes. They are used when there are misaligned teeth, as well. Suffice to say, veneers can be used to treat any visual imperfection related to teeth, as well as to enhance the visual appearance.
Getting veneers may require a few trips to our office in Carlsbad, CA. This can be done over a period of a few weeks as the process requires the user to wait for custom-made veneers to be created by our respected ceramists. Generally, the first visit is made so the dentist can diagnose the teeth and understand the user’s goal from for having veneers installed. After that, the dentist will prepare the surface of the teeth and design the prototypes for the user. Once approved by the user, the images of the prototypes will be sent to our skillful ceramists who will be using this information to create the user’s new veneers.
The patient will first wear the temporary veneers for a few weeks while waiting for the final ones from the ceramist to arrive. Once received, the custom-designed veneers will then be fitted. The bonding procedure is often the most tedious task as it requires the dentist to carefully apply the veneers to the user’s teeth. It is a time-consuming task and also the most important step of getting veneers as they need to be accurately placed and fused with the user’s teeth.
The final step is to remove any excess cement from the bonding process and to make some final adjustment and corrections if needed. Once that’s done, the user may need to go back to our office in Carlsbad, CA for a follow-up session. This is so we can examine the gum area and see how it responds to the veneers, as well as to check on the placement of the veneers.
